	The Endometriosis Association was founded in 1980, by Mary Lou Ballweg. With its international headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Association was the first organization in the world devoted to endometriosis, and chronic immunological and hormonal disease. Before 1980, there was no support available, no patient literature, and almost no research. Now, the Association has 175 support groups in the United States and Canada and hundreds of groups worldwide; has published three popular books on endo; and conducts research at 23 sites in six countries (including Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (NIH)). A disease once believed to be simply a reproductive disorder, endo is now known to also be an immune system disease with far-reaching impact on an estimated 89 million females worldwide.
